Ever wonder how the dogs in movies learn their parts? In recent years, dog training has advanced greatly by applying many of the techniques of marine mammal trainers. Kristen VanNess, graduate of the Karen Pryor Academy, will share some of those lessons in this 2-hour Trick Training Workshop.
Want to teach your dog to ring a bell? Crawl on her belly? How about to walk backwards, or ride a skateboard, or weave through your legs? Think your friends will believe that your dog can count to seven?
This workshop will combine lecture, demonstration, and hands on practice so you can learn what you need to know to teach these tricks and more to your Superstar!
Working spots are limited, register early. Auditor spots are unlimited.
In this workshop we’ll cover
- How using a clicker can speed up learning and quickly and clearly show the animal what we want
- How to break complex behaviors down into trainable parts, and then put them back together
- How to train a dog to touch a target, and how to use this skill to teach your dog lots of awesome (and useful) tricks
- The best timing and placement of your rewards to energize your dog’s performance
- Clever use of cues and props so you can present your new tricks in an entertaining way
Dog & Handler Team spots are for dogs who are non-aggressive with people and other dogs, and who are comfortable in a group class environment.
All attendees, with and without dogs, will participate and be included in training activities. The dogs will learn to perform some tricks during the workshop, and all workshop attendees will leave prepared to start teaching these tricks to their own dogs at home.
Trick training can be fun for every member of the family. Your imagination is the limit, and for those looking for a challenge in training, tricks can be as simple or complicated as you like. If your dog is a therapy dog, if you work with children, or if you just like making people smile, trick training is a great choice for you and your dog.
Don’t hesitate to call or email with questions.
